All aboard HMS Dragon

March 12th, 2014

Students from the L20 Hotel School were invited onboard the Royal Navy’s newest warship HMS Dragon when she called in to Liverpool recently.

HMS Dragon is the fourth type 45 air-defence destroyer to join the naval fleet and this was her maiden visit to Liverpool.

Our students were invited to experience first-hand life catering for the naval workforce as they prepared lunch in the galley kitchen. As well as undertaking all of the preparation and delivery of meals to the naval officers and supporting staff they were also charged with creating lunch for the Captain. This was served in his quarters to a group of invited dignitaries including the Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police.

Of his visit to the vessel, lecturer Stephen Otty said:

“We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit onboard the HMS Dragon and I was delighted that through Port Academy Liverpool we were able to offer students an insight in to one of the many careers that catering can offer. What struck our students most was the international aspect of life as a navy caterer with the potential to meet so many different nationalities and travel the world as they work.”
